wInquiry™ FAQ

Error Messages

I get a HASP Error message when trying to enter a session. Why?

This message you received when trying to enter a session provides a clue. There are two types of haps – parallel and USB. All current models use a USB hasp. If it has been several years since you purchased your system, you may still have a hasp that connects to the parallel port. If you would like to swap your parallel hasp for a USB version, please contact us for a cost.

The message indicates that you either don't have the hasp connected to a working parallel/USB port, the hasp has expired, or you have the wrong type of hasp. All current hasps (green USB) do not have an expiration. Visually inspect the hasp and make sure that there is a sticker on it that reads "ARS WINQUIRY".

Note: Any other hasp type will not work. If you have PowerPoll as well as wInquiry, make sure you don’t just have the two hasps mixed up.

I get an Error message, receiver on Comport not working. Why?

By default the wInquiry software is installed on comport 2. In some computer hardware configurations, comport 2 is being occupied by some other device or is disabled in Device Manager. To enter or continue a session without the Hasp warning message, a comport must be either enabled or switched. Try one of the following possible solutions:

  1. Close wInquiry if it is running and enter the KP Configure 3.0 or ARS Configure utility. This utility can be reached by clicking the Windows start button | Programs | ARS Applications | KP Configure 3.0 or ARS Configure.

In KP Configure 3.0, with the keypad system connected, click the port scan button and watch the window for letters to appear in a port scan. This indicates communication with the base and the com port the system should be set to. In ARS Configure, click the ARS port set-up button and double-click your port 1 line. This opens the connection set-up window and will list the ports available to you. You can also use the “listen for receiver on each port” check box to provide the communication with the base to ensure you know what port to set it to. Change the Serial com # and click OK. This should provide you with appropriate communication with the system. If this does not work, go to Step 2.

  2. Make sure that your comport is enabled in Device Manager. Hold down the Alt-Key and double click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

This brings up the Systems Properties dialog from which you should click the Device Manager tab. Make sure that View devices by type is selected and look down the list for Ports. Click on the + sign out beside Ports to expand. Single click Communications Port (COM1) and click the properties button.

Under Device usage make sure that Disable in hardware profile is unchecked. If it is checked, uncheck it. Repeat for Communications Port (COM2). Restart wInquiry and see if this works. If not proceed to step 3 below.

  3. You may have the comport(s) in BIOS disabled. Entering BIOS should only be done by advanced users. If you don't know how to work in BIOS stay out of it. Call someone that can help you or consult your computer users manual.

Realize that if you attempt to change BIOS settings you do so on your own. We accept no responsibility for any changes made there.

Tips and Tricks

I want to be able to display a correct answer highlight after a graph is displayed. How do I do that?

The Correct Answer Highlight is a way of highlighting certain text in your question AFTER the question has been polled in order to highlight the correct answer (or perhaps to dim the incorrect answers) in your question. To cause selected text in a question to be highlighted AFTER a poll, you must set up correct-answer highlights. This is done while in the editor working on your question by delimiting text to be highlighted with a hidden 'h' on either side.

To cause a section of text to be highlighted after the poll...Position your cursor in front of the response (no spaces) you want highlighted, hold down the control key (Ctrl) on your keyboard, and hit the h key and release both keys then hit the backslash key ( \ ). Position your cursor in behind the response (no spaces) you want highlighted, and repeat the same sequence of keystrokes.

Note: To be certain that the hidden text is indeed there, on the menu bar choose View | Hidden Text. The hidden back slashes (\) will appear if the above procedure was done correctly. To hide again choose View | Hidden Text to turn off the check mark next to Hidden Text.

In the Question Setup dialog, you must use the Misc button to reach the dialog in which the color of the highlighted text can be set. Make sure you apply a good color to avoid misleading or hard to read answers. By default the answer color was set to yellow and suggest this as a good choice.

Note: The latest version of wInquiry 3.0 contains an option that enables you to accomplish this by simply clicking a checkbox during qbase setup. If you do not have the latest version, go to our website www.arsdirect.com to obtain the latest version. You will need the log-in information. If you do not have it, please contact us at support@audienceresponse.com to obtain that information.

How do I compare Pre-test/Post-test graphs?

If you want to compare the responses collected from 2 questions graphically and output those graphs side by side, here is what you must do when you want to compare a Pre-test/Post-test combination.

Assign all pre-test questions in the qbase with a unique question synopsis and a unique ID Code. The reason for a unique synopsis is that you want the graph's label to differentiate itself from the other graph label.

For instance, a suitable synopsis for Pre-Test question 1 might be something like "Pre Q1", and for Post-Test Question 1 it might be "Post-Q1".

The reason for a unique ID code assigned to all Pre-test questions is that all Post test questions will automatically look for and pick up the pretest ID and display 2 dual graphs. A suitable ID for Pre-Test Q1 might be something like "Q1".

Finally, to all post-test questions click the Misc button on the Question Setup dialog and place a check by Dual. In the compare IDCODE field this is where you want to enter the ID Code you assigned to the Pretest Question (i.e. Q1 if you used that code).

Note: Be aware that ID Codes are case sensitive and must be entered exactly the same way you entered the IDCODE on the Pre-Test question 1 (i.e. Q1 and not q1 if you used this code).

Display Questions

Why do my graphs come up on a separate page?

Why does my question "disappear" when my graph is displayed?

The most likely cause is that the graph background on the Graph Setup dialog is set to something other than No Background.
The question seems to "Disappear" as soon as a graph is displayed because the graph background image replaces the question background image as it repaints the output monitor's screen.

To "squash" the graph so that the question and the graph can be displayed together, set the graph & question backgrounds the same and change the background on the graph setup dialog to No Background.

Graph location setting needs to be set to the desired level: Custom, bottom half, bottom third, bottom quarter, etc.

Can the operator see how each participant responded immediately following a poll?

Can I show everyone in the audience how participants responded?

If you want to display the participant names, as opposed to just the keypad number, an IDBase has to be used with the session. The keypads, should be either Rostered or Auto Rostered prior to polling.

To get this option efficiently, you should be running in dual screen mode. Poll a question in the normal manner and click the View radio button (Dual Monitor) and click the Response button. This displays an overall summary and how each participant responded to the question.

If you want to show the audience how each person responded, then you select “Individual Responses” from the display options. To modify how this display looks, go to qbase defaults – graph/displays button and the individual responses display on the right. Reference the help file for more information on setting this display up

My computer's window setting is in dual screen mode, but my wInquiry session is showing up on my left monitor?

Be sure that that you have selected “display 2” under monitors in wInquiry on the session set-up screen. If the computer is in dual screen mode when this session is created, wInquiry will recognize it and automatically display in dual screen. If the session was created in single screen mode, but you now want to go to dual screen mode, you will need to select the monitors button to make display 2 active.

Report Related Questions

Raw data reports has a dash (-) and an (N) in there. What's that mean?

Raw data reports prints out data by packets of 5. For instance if you print raw data/individual for 35 questions, you will notice that there are 7 rows of 5 data items for a total of 35 "Questions".

Since not all questions are polling type of questions, the (N) found in a cluster of 5 represents a Non-Polling "Question". wInquiry will not collect data from a non-polling question.

Sometimes you may also see dashes (-) in those groups. The dashes mean that on that particular polling question, no response was entered or communicated from the keypad back to wInquiry.

Furthermore, wInquiry will not collect a response from a keypad if time has either not begun, or has expired, or the keypad itself has become disabled in some way.

An M in that location means that it was a multi-digit poll. To see the multi-digit data, use the export button to export the multi-digit data to a file or direct to Excel to examine the individual multi-digit data.

Sound Related Questions

I created a playlist and imported it into a qbase, but none of the sounds work?

To help track down the reason sounds do not work within wInquriy, you will need to look in several different places.

In Qbase, look under Qbase Defaults | Preferences and make sure Enable Sound is checkmarked. If it does not have a check in the box, click in the box to place a check there and then click the save button.

The next place to look is Qbase Defaults | Sounds and make sure there are sound files in the timer play list drop down box. If there are not, you will need to add them. Click on the add button and choose between System or Project resources.

Tip: You may add more than one file at a time. Once you have selected the file(s), click the OK button.

When in Session Mode, click the settings radio button and make sure that the sound check box is enabled. Also check the Sound Defaults button to make sure that none of the sound events are inhibited.

Note: Specific sounds may also be associated with each question by selecting sounds under MISC. on the question setup screen.

Finally, make sure that in the configuration program, your resources are pointing to the appropriate file path.
